Understanding Hallmarks & Gold Purity
Hallmarking can sometimes be confusing — especially with jewellery purchased overseas. Here’s what you need to know:
- UK Hallmarks – In the UK, all gold jewellery above 1g should be hallmarked by an Assay Office. The hallmark confirms the item’s purity (e.g., 750 = 18ct, 916 = 22ct).
- KDM Gold – In Indian jewellery, “KDM” often refers to jewellery soldered using cadmium. It is not an official hallmark and does not guarantee purity.
- International Hallmark Variations – Jewellery from India or Dubai that is sold as “22ct” can sometimes test as 19–20ct when checked with an XRF machine. This is usually due to incorrect hallmarking or the use of alloys.
- Impact on Valuation – Since price is directly linked to purity, an item testing lower than the stated hallmark will be valued at its true purity, ensuring fairness to both parties.
